While I have always played around with henna, I started dabbling with it more in high school. I carried a henna cone with me at all times, teaching myself new designs and coming up with my own techniques. I found henna as a way to relax and truly immerse myself in an art so closely tied to my culture. Moreover, it reminded me of my childhood, where henna was more than an individual escape, but rather a community experience, one filled with laughter and love.
On one memorable high school lunch break, I remember whipping out my henna cone. I showed a couple of my friends, and they were immediately intrigued and wanted me to do their henna. I quickly realized that henna, while an individual art, was much better when it was shared.
That’s when I had the idea to create Henna with a Heart, a community for students to come together and learn the art of henna and its cultural roots. I taught members of varying levels of experience, holding weekly workshops to teach fundamentals while also encouraging members to collaborate on original designs. We’ve hosted multiple henna booths on campus and collaborated with over 20 different UCLA organizations hosting henna booths at their events. It was truly amazing to see many members who were struggling to hold a henna cone have the confidence to run henna booths and also teach others.
However, I knew something was missing. We had this amazing opportunity to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. That’s why we donate 100% of the proceeds from our events to local nonprofit organizations. So far, we have raised around $2000 and plan on donating by the end of this year.
